"We are all familiar with pictures that interest and excite our admiration but do not move us as works of art. They leave untouched our aesthetic emotions because it is not their forms but the ideas or their information suggested by their forms that affect us. What quality is shared by all objects that do provoke our aesthetic emotions? What quality is common to Mexican sculpture, a Persian bowl, and the masterpieces of Cezanne? Only one answer seems possible- significant form. In each, lines and colors combine in a particular way, certain forms and relations of forms stir our aesthetic emotions."
